The thing is though, you can't copyright a style. Jackson Pollock famously saw the drip paintings by Janet Sobel in an art gallery circa 1945 and though he'd use the 'drip painting' technique himself - his paintings now sell for tens of millions of dollars. While this may seem like Sobel's work was 'ripped off' by Pollock, and I'm sure it was deeply upsetting for her, when it comes to copyright law there is no case to answer there, because style and technique cannot be copyrighted. Jackson Pollock did the same thing that AI does - it looks, it learns, it creates new works 'in the style of' - but they are not a composite. While this feels infringing, and I personally believe the ethical choice would be for the companies to let artists easily opt out, the issue is NOT one of copyright in any jurisdiction.
