I am, literally this week, in the process of applying to grad school for AI. What constantly irritates me is that people seem to immediately assume not only that I like and want to work with generative AI but also that generative AI = intelligent AI. Ignoring all the obviously immoral applications, generative AI is boring. Boring in the sense that it’s just a big copy machine. It’s part of a self obsessive trend I’m starting to see in Robotics and AI where us AI engineers seem to only desire to make machines that look and behave exactly like us. We already exist and, not to brag, we are pretty neat as well. AI can be neat too but lean into what makes them different. They don’t need to do what humans do (step away from the paint brush sir) Idk where I’m going with this I just want to find a place that will allow me to do research on using sensors and machine learning to decode electrical and chemical signals in the root structures of plants so I can listen to the forest
