I find the regular use of words that require consciousness to describe an observed behaviour of a statistical system to perhaps not be helpful. This conversation is generally good in talking about the actual systems as the actually are, but still falls into this trap. about 13 minutes in Nate makes reference to models 'showing awareness of being watched' but it's not 'aware' of anything anymore that any other statistical system having differences in independent inputs (here that's the prompt requesting different intermediate outputs) results in differences in the dependant outputs. These are (very complex) statistical systems not conscious minds and I think one of things that we need to get better at is not doing that very human thing of projecting personification on such a system. Wilson was a bloodied volleyball, Claude is a network of statistical transforms trained on trillions of lines of text.
