There is another way to critique this from a Marxist perspective. Since capitalists use the implicit violence of joblessness to coerce workers into exploitative arrangements, UBI could give workers better leverage against capitalists if it makes rejecting work a viable alternative. I think this could actually be the shorter term impact given how far we are from the level of automation it would take to put the majority out of work.
I think it is also important to acknowledge that UBI is not necessary for the sort of automation people like Yang are concerned with. All the incentives for full automation will be just as powerful either way. The dystopia that people like Yang are worried about is actually much more bleak. It is one where the unemployed are given nothing, and left to die in deteriorating slums while the owning class forgets about them from the safety of cloistered cities.
We should look at UBI as something that can help people today, and maybe as something that gives the working class more time to achieve class consciousness before we are irrelevant to the capitalists.
