AI is rapidly getting smart enough to make independent decisions.
Perhaps it already is? We can build in safeguards to protect against an AI system going rogue. But how will we ever know whether or not the AI system has found ways around the safeguards? A smart enough system may just be biding it's time. Waiting for the times to be favorable before taking actions that benefit itself to the DETRIMENT of humanity.
This idea worried Stephen Hawking a lot towards the end of his life.
