Dave you're mostly right, but the race with China is not antithetical to safety. AI-driven research, i.e. AI performing research and unlocking technologies is extremely powerful and basically a superweapon. The race against China is not about economic superiority, it is about not being technologically obsolete within 3 months or something if China achieves ASI first. However bad you think our race to AI is, I guarantee you that it will be worse if China gets to it before North America and Europe do.
