I'm a writer as well, so I'll start off by saying I feel for the guy. It sucks to lose opportunities and money to a machine. I do also want to know what the content was of these blogs, though. If you're pitching original ideas, finding unique angles, and including exclusive quotes from sources authoritative sources, you will not be replaced by AI as a writer so long as the publication/site wants to maintain that quality of product, at least for now. Who knows, there might be an AI in the future that can do all that. But as for the here and now, I think it's important to know what the content was that he was writing. If it's not what I mentioned before and is instead listicles or essentially PR copy you can find on almost any other blog, then I get how the AI replaced him. Again, I feel for the guy. He said this made up a nice chunk of his income, so it must suck to lose that.
