imo the reason why ppls had such a kneejerk reaction to it is that art if seen as one of the things that makes us "human", it makes us unique and different from all the other animals on the planet, but imo that's a logical fallacy. in fact NOTHING we make art-wise is unique, look at any piece of art and you can always see something being referenced or copied from real life
every landscape, every piece of porn, every meme. all of them are not unique, there is copies of trees in every landscape, representations of animal, plant and man in every digital art piece.
so i believe that the hatred stems from the fact we thing ai is invading our sanctuary where we are the best hands down, when no such area existed in the first place
