By far the most frightening use of ai is by governments to surveil the populace. AI exponentially increases the ability of government (and corporations) to identify individuals who disagree with their policies and to make life difficult for those individuals. Since the current administration has already declared protesters to be terrorists and attacked Anthropic for refusing to allow its technology to be used illegally, I think we are teetering on a terrible precipice.
