Back when steam tractors replaced oxen and farmhands, when locomotives replaced horse carriages and factory production lines replaced traditional manufacturing, there were places to go for those laid off by machines. They still needed to be crewed and someone had to build the machines, mine the resources and build the infrastructure to access the land.
As manufacturing jobs declined and were outsourced, unemployed workers moved into the service industry. Today the gig economy is largely built on that (think doordash, dog walkers or tiktok entertainers). Some were smugly told to "learn to code".
With the rise of AI we see even the coders replaced, well paying jobs that lasted for only 10-15 years. With everyone laid off it must be asked who this economy still serves. These driverless trucks move lots of freight, but who will be able to afford it if nobody has a job? A strong economy has always been desirable since it meant wealth for the people. This is simply no longer the case, a strong economy advancing at a fast pace is chipping away at what wealth is still left.
This issue will grow ever more pressing and we better come up with a vision for the future very soon before the system will implode
