I understand your argument to be, and correct me if I'm wrong, he isn't an artist because he doesn't posses the technical skill to paint or draw what he created? Is an artist purely defined by their technical ability to manipulate a brush or pencil? This person what ever his character flaws might be had a vision for something he wanted to express and he used the tools available to generate that image. Would you claim that someone with a physical disability isn't an artist if they generate something using technology available because they aren't capable of drawing or painting? Are they not an artist because they created something that didn't exist before? We've all seen the AI art fails with a dozen nostrils and twice as many fingers, can you honestly say he didn't have to touch anything up in photoshop? I completely agree with you however on the process of AI training on other peoples art, I would argue however that artists are also trained on previously established art. Most fields of technology, business or art will have hundreds or even thousands of case studies where you learn about what works and what doesn't work from people who were in the field before you. It would be great if these AI generators would list where they got their 'inspiration' from, the data set that they're trained on etc. That still doesn't change the fact this person created something new. Something that didn't exist until he was done with his tweaks, his edits etc. I challenge anyone who thinks that it's as easy as typing a few words and pressing enter to recreate this art piece featured in the video. the same argument here could be said for any photography competition where you can buy photoshop presets take a photo from any popular tourist site and submit it as your own work when all you did was press a button and upload some settings, yes this happens a lot.
