17:20 On on the example of generated memes in group chats: "it's not what people do!" - I'm sad to tell you, but it most definitely is. I'm working in the field of AI (not working on the models themself, but implementing specialized AI applications (not image generation, though)) and our teamchat is constantly full of generated memes. I myself am a defender of classical handmade memes or even selfdrawn memes, but my colleagues either don't have the skill or the patience to do that. So they resort to generated ones. And what shall i say: during a team meeting the generated memes are just faster than the handdrawn or handmade ones. Nothing you can do about it.
BUT! I didn't think that is a "good", sustainable or "viable" enough (in terms of money for the AI companies) usecase for genAI to keep it afloat without massive VC backing it. They are scrambeling to find usecases and this is the best they can come up with? Memes are made a bit faster in live group chats? Wow. That'll surely make a lot of money.
For the foreseeable future genAI is going to stay. But it'll never be the lifechanging thing that they want you to believe. We're already seeing the plateau of this technology. Newer models are just marginally better than the previous generation. There will be some innovations in the coming months and years, but the big hype at the beginning is as always: a massively overblown bubble to convince investors. And it's about to burst.
I'd like everyone who doesn't know about the gartner hypecycle to look it up. GenAI is already in its way into the "valley of tears", there's no denying that.
I personally think genAI, especially for text generation, will always be there in some form or another. BUT: i think people will get tired of it. Especially of AI "art". In a few decades our kids will look back at this time and say: "your memes were really ugly and lifeless, what's that about?" But far less dusruption will take place than is wished for or feared. Artists will be there, they will change with the times as they always have, they will innovate, they will communicate, they will destill the zeitgeist, and they will persevere. Nothing's gonna change that.
Sorry for the monologue! 😅
