AI will never be sentient because computers are not living things. The Oxford dictionary definition of 'life': the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death.
Computers are not organic, do not physically grow without outside assistance, cannot reproduce (not the same as production), and do not die (something that has never lived cannot die, being unplugged is not death because you can plug it back in again).
