Big Tech isn't in charge of AI technology. There are open source models out there out-performing the Big Tech models. Google even sent out an internal newsletter about how they're getting stomped by open source, and they "have no moat" to keep the competition at bay because they're already behind despite working on this for over ten years.
Small groups of geeks are generating models that beat Google's in just a few days with a consumer-level laptop, as that newsletter reports, and Google is PANICKING.
