Anyone that says we don’t know how AI works is either trying to sell you on AI as being more advanced than it is or are being fooled. We know how AI works, and the people developing the AIs know how they work because it isn’t anything supernatural or miraculous. To simplify the explanation, it’s a predictive text model based on the statistical likelihood of positional word relationships in syntax. There is no intelligence, no sentience, and no sapience behind a LLM. We’re all subject to apophenia and agency-detection. History has demonstrated that humans tend to think there is agency behind things that have none —like Zeus being why Lightning strikes the ground or Poseidon being the cause of storms. We’re doing the same thing here to ourselves. Because a LLM can output human-like text, a lot of people fill in the gap with their imagination and come to believe that the computer program has agency and consciousness.
