I'm a writer with ADHD. I can "see" the issues in my work perfectly fine, I just struggle to fix them. Anyway, I have several thoughts about AI and it's use in the writing community. When chatGPT first became popular, writers across the globe, including me, were worried by the implications of AI. After all many writers, myself included, have built a career upon our ability to create unique content, edit written content and leverage an extensive vocabulary. We were not easily replaceable and all of a sudden, it seemed as though we were very much dispensable. However, as the months ticked by, I realized that AI tools can be used by writers to enhance their work, not necessarily replace it. I've also observed that having a creative mind and being a proficient writer helps prompt AI more effectively. For example, when my husband used AI to generate content for ads for his business, he struggled to prompt AI to generate exactly what he wanted. I stepped in and using my ability to communicate effectively with the written word, was able to get his ad content ready in just a few minutes. I also think that AI image generation is the coolest development I've ever seen. I can use AI-powered image generators to create images of my characters, settings and scenes, allowing me to better visualise them and maintain consistency in my writing, which in turn makes editing considerably easier when you have a visual reference point for the aforementioned objects/situations. BUT...
There's a big but here, and I think your video, D'Angelo, encapsultes the issue with AI perfectly. Being able to come up with a creative idea alone does not a writer make. Using AI to find synonyms? Fine. Using AI to do research? Awesome, amazing, I do it all the time and wonder how much more time writers had to spend on research in the past, it had to be a lot more. But getting an idea for a story and making someone/something else write it for you, without creating your own style of writing, without leveraging your own vocabulary or doing anything to make your writing truly unique? Not fine. It's the same reason why people criticize published "authors" who hired a ghostwriter. I sincerely doubt writing competions are okay with participants submitting ghostwritten work. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Not only that, but using AI to write a novel from start to finish devalues the work that "real" (can't think of a better word at the moment) authors do. The time-consuming writing, the staring at the blank page, the numerous times you have to delete a paragraph, or a page, or a chapter and start again. The process is what counts, the process and effort are what should be rewarded, along with the quality of the content. Nobody should take that away from us.
