I still too this day don’t understand why people are complaining about self driving technology. It’s much safer than people. There are hundreds of MILLIONS of car related deaths every single year worldwide. Even if autonomous vehicles were 50% less deadly that would still translate to saving tens if not hundreds of millions of lives. It’s not about making it perfect and without any accidents or flaws. It’s about making it safer. Look at air travel! Modern commercial aviation is actually very automated. About 60-70% of the proses is done automatically. Plans can even land and take off on their own. Yet we still have about a dozen or two plain crashes every year. But 90% of these accidents are caused either directly or indirectly because of human error and human flaws.
Automated cars have the potential to make driving orders of magnitude safer than it currently is. It won’t make it 100% safe. But the way the system is designed it’s estimated that full rollout of automated driving could reduce accidents by as much as 80% and deaths by as much as 90%. That is a lot of people saved just by removing human factors from driving.
