Pro ai here. I’m not here to bait a debate in the comment section, and will not read any response to this comment.
To say that art is accessible just because you can paint whatever you like with any colored fluid, is to completely miss the point. I, and lots of others can’t do that even with an actual paintbrush and paint. That would require several expensive classes, or years of practice, which we will not take. Both are a privilege and have been for over a thousand years, and professional artists seem opposed to the idea of doing anything that would make it less so on a systemic level. I will not argue over the issue of art theft, which I believe does not exist because I am a political pirate- I think copyright needs to be abolished entirely. However using copyrighted images to train a network is inherently transformative so it does not violate the law, nor can it be plagiarism as, properly trained, they cannot accidentally replicate any specific image in the training set, and there is no other sense of the term art theft that makes sense in this context. Aside from that training on copyrighted images just isn’t wrong.
As for the thing about modern art I agree with you-standards have clearly not fallen. However the real issue there is the insistence that art needs to have a deeper meaning or even inherently does when it’s not ai, and some have misrepresented us as being opposed to art having any deeper meaning, when in fact at least I would argue it doesn’t have to. The bit about artists choosing the ‘pollock painting’ over the one with an actual scene is an indication that they value backstory over the form of art, which to the general population is considered pretentious nonsense. Yes, aesthetics is in the mind of whoever perceives the thing, and we shouldn’t have to be told its backstory to properly enjoy a thing. A urinal is still just a urinal, which probably was actually designed by an artist before it was ever used, but for function and nothing else, curating it to place it in a museum with a signature didn’t change that. A fan is still just a fan, doesn’t matter that it was placed in a museum to honor a dead gay lover. And, a good looking image of a fictional landscape is still a good looking image of a fictional landscape, no matter how it was produced.
Even if we saw you the way you would have us see you, we probably wouldn’t suddenly stop using ai, or start advocating for the regulations on your wishlist, because those would still be a very, very bad idea. I will not elaborate here.
