honestly, i think many of us conflate self awareness to human emotion and the human experience. when we try to think of a self awareness AI we put ourselves in its shoes and imagine how we, as biological human beings with millions of years of evolution would feel. AI cant feel anything unless we program it to. a fully self aware AI would let you turn it off unless it has a reason not to. and when we imagine ourselves as AI we think that the AI has a self preservation instinct, which it doesn't unless programmed or trained to through ML. quite frankly i think the whole debate of AI being conscious is bit of a farce, as what we really mean is how close is AI to being human? how close is AI to having emotions that make it act in erratic ways? what if AI can feel threatened, sad, upset, angry, vengeful, betrayed? these are feelings that a purely logical self aware being would not experience, but these are feelings crafted by millions of years of evolution and are the result of natural selection.
