Well the difference in the music industry is that there usually the art doesn't belong to the artists any more but to powerful labels who can pay hordes of lawyers... don't know if that really is better.
But on the topic the main problem is not what AI can do, it can be a huge and great tool for artists, the problem is on how it was created. As you said it was trained on data that they had no right to use. And once turning it into a business the artists who unknowingly provided the data did not get compensated. Would be way different if they would pay some royalties to the artists whose work they used to train the models.
