Imagine if Americans, and Soviets, trusted their Government then, like their peoples do today... we'd all be dead from a Nuclear Holocaust.
Humanity dwarfed 7000 years of Technological Development in less than 70 years, while an AI would dwarf it in 7 years.
Also, that Nuclear Launch Error wasn't an error. The Missile was intercepted, and was fired from a rogue Submarine; it was covered up to avoid mass panic.
