The CTO saw big savings in getting rid of “dumb” front end staff and found out the hard way that they ain’t so dumb.
I sometimes look at the people who take the orders whilst simultaneously collecting payment and processing the order of the previous customer onwards and I realise that I would seriously suffer with the levels of multitasking required. They’re not doing an exciting job but they are doing a boring and complex one really consistently well and better than I suspect that I could.
AI will have uses and I have encountered them. It’s brilliant at parsing large complicated datasets so long as they are accurately compiled. AI will not compile those datasets because it lacks the judgment required.
My Wife’s cancer diagnosis was compared with a dataset of diagnoses, treatment plans and outcomes and her treatment appears to have been spot on over a decade on. It still required many skilled individuals to diagnose, operate and administer treatment plans. It also required someone to toil over generating a errorless dataset and evolve the required algorithms.
AI is going to be like the paperless office…a real boon in some ways but the paper is still going to be there and more than ever probably.
