chatGPT was first released late in my senior year of engineering undergrad. I realized at that moment that I may be the very end of a generation of competent engineers, or... competent or literate people in general, really. Education now is like an economic bubble that needs to crash in order to stabilize. AI is just rapidly accelerating the problems that were already there. For the vast majority of students and everyone, it's almost entirely useless, yet necessary. Eventually things will become so upside-down that many employers will realize it's literally better to hire students without degrees than with them. Things will get very interesting after that. And I hate to say all this because I had many professors who were good and I now consider personal friends, and I don't want them to lose their jobs. I don't want people not to get education... but I would rather a few people get real education than half of everyone getting "education."
