Alex, you sometimes go on about consciousness and you tend to do a thought experiment where you imagine a triangle and then you ask yourself where the triangle is. You don't seem to be impressed with discussions of neural correlates of imagining a triangle, which are actually fairly well established.
When you talk to an LLM about trolley problems can you tell me where in the LLM these trolleys are?
As your guest said, you can look at their activation patterns, but the interpretability of that is hard and in the case of LLMs we can see what every individual artificial neuron is doing.
We cannot see what every individual neuron is doing when you imagine a triangle but the triangle is not in a supernatural esoteric place, the triangle is in the pattern of activation of your neurons.
As your guest said, it's hard to know—even with perfect knowledge of every artificial neuron in an LLM—where the trolley is, but I'm sure you accept there isn't anything other than the hardware, the model and the pattern of activation of its artificial neural network.
