I think, until we swap to photonic CPUs, AI will be too vastly limited by energy requirements to hit AGI levels. If people manage to port these LLMs and Reasoning models over to wave-based computers, though? That's magnitudes more efficiency on the energy side *and* magnitudes more information density on the processing side, so it makes this much spookier much faster.
Fortunately/unfortunately (depending on who you ask), photonic CPUs are very difficult to make still. We have them and use them for certain physics simulations/calculations/applications, but aside from that they go mostly unheard of, so no large-scale complex Operating Systems exist for them yet. They're all highly specialized devices, currently, so I think it's more likely we hit high-intelligence on binary systems and then those high-intelligence binary systems assist us in making photonic systems that leap-frog the AI into the AGI realms.
