I am a middle school teacher that teaches both students and teachers about AI. I usually tell people that are scared of AI that it’s more like when a child repeats what they heard on tv with no understanding of what they said. If you’re not paying attention, they sound scarily smart, but they’ve just studied “smart” people’s behaviors and mimic them. But they’ve can’t actually think about it critically. That being said, the speed at which companies are using it to replace educated people, even though it can’t actually think, is terrifying in its own right.
