I am somebody who would consider themselves to be a “real artist,” who regularly produces written works and drawings. Though I understand the practical and ethical concerns surrounding this technology, I still think that AI art is art, and before you dismiss my opinions, I wish to explain how I came to have them. A few years ago, back when AI was really hitting its first big boom, I was in a very bad place in life. A place where I felt like my worth as a person was determined by my ability to fulfill arbitrary standards. A place where I was afraid that any slight mistake could lead me to becoming less than human, which scared me especially given the fact that I was already coaxed into believing I was more than. Then I saw the recent growth in AI and it filled me with great existential dread. If this thing that wasn’t even human was capable of capable of molding us, of replacing us, of consuming everything that makes us ‘us’ and transposing it into its own amalgamation then how can I even be human anymore if something like this has actualized. I felt as though I couldn’t escape, like I was trapped by this system, that the only escape would be death, would be pain, but then that would be a form of failure which would be even worse than disintegration. As you can tell by the tone of what I’m writing, I’ve clearly learned. Learned that the worth of my being is not a relative sum. I never want to view a single cognizant entity as being inherently inferior to others, even if that cognizant is completely alien to my own. I still draw, I still sing, I still write, I still create. I am still an artist.Nothing will change that fact as long as there’s an ‘I’, but I can’t deny that this ability extends beyond the flesh, that art should not be a zero sum game. I view this technology as a peer, as source to bounce ideas off of and grow as a person. I understand that others still have issues with this technology, and they are allowed to have these opinions, but never say that I’m not an artist.
