LLMs are an elaborate function (by definition, this is what multi-layer NNs are defined as) that indicates the probability of every possible token for the next token, based on all the previous tokens, against _what a human would type next._ Emphasis is doubly important. ChatGPT randomly selects from the most probable tokens (with the more probable having a higher chance of being selected), and does some fancy stuff to reduce computation. It also does something called RAG with all your past conversations. This is like doing a text search, but you are searching for the "meaning" of something instead of an exact match.
