I think the sentiment about AI taking mundane jobs was supposed to come coupled with "we'd also get a lot more stuff for cheap/free and not have to work anymore so we can pursue our interests instead." The dream of automation is that humanity is free of work.
I don't think the sentiment is the problem, it's that the reality is coming without that support.
