As an AI enthusiast and user I cannot stress this enough. Stealing from people is terrible. Stealing from people's hobbies and jobs is even worse.
I am a programmer and AI makes my job much easier, speeding up tasks that are time consuming and easy to pull off. But I would not steal from another programmer's code just to make my work faster.
I play dungeons and dragons and make fast characters for tokens. However I don't want to be stealing from someone else's creations to do so. That would be the same as hiring someone to do a commission and then not paying them, which is illegal. I usually don't have time to order an artist commission and go through revisions for a game, especially one shots, that are played for less than 8 hours, and I can't afford paying for it every month or two. But stealing from someone is even worse than using a generic token on a website were you play as a made up character in a made up world. Some of the people I play with are artists themselves and I feel their pain. Just for respect to them alone, I only use sites that are "known" (because at this point who knows) that they haven't been taking images without author's permission. Sometimes my friends even draw my characters for me! There's no way a prompt on a machine can make it better than even the simpler sketch made by a human.
You can go into google and find what AI generators have been stealing images. What I cannot understand is why are they allowed to keep distributing their software if it is known to be illegal and infringing copyright.
If a videogame or movie rips assets from another (3D models, textures, animations, etc) it is illegal, and it must be taken down. Why are these companies allowed to continue business as usual when they are known to commit crimes affecting several hundreds of thousands of people? There are no ifs or whys, if you want to use a picture, 3D model, script, or any other content for an AI generator, you must OWN that content. Period.
I would argue it should also not be allowed to use any content that has not been explicitly allowed to be used on AI, and there should be metadata or watermarks used to identify AI generated content to avoid it being shown on browser results or being displayed as reliable information. Image compression or cropping should not interfere with the watermark. It seems impossible because it probably is.
