We will never know if AI is conscious as long as we don't even know *what* consciousness is. This is a topic I've read a good bit about and no one seems to have any serious testable answers to the hard problems of consciousness. It seems very plausible we could end up with a scenario where AI takes over and replaces humans completely and consciousness and all meaning dies with it.
