I'm an AI researcher who has published papers in generative AI. This is a very misleading video. While it's true that the models generate the new images from noise and are at their core statistical models, they have a rich internal representation of what they're modeling and there are many sensible definitions of understanding for which these representations tick all the boxes. Modeling an internal representation of art based on the concepts that went into it, playing with those concepts, and then turning new combinations of those concepts back into images is an accurate description of both human and AI creativity in many ways and any unuanced take that the AI either does or does not understand what its doing is... nonsense frankly.
