It’s less likely mass layoffs are happening bc of AI and more likely that companies are replacing Americans with labor done by H1-B visa holders. It’s important this situation is framed carefully because 1) non-Americans should not be blamed for this especially during a time where anti immigrant sentiment is high. It’s American companies discarding American labor. 2) We have got to stop lionizing AI. While its capabilities are growing, the technology is nowhere it needs to be to wipe out the workforce. We play into AI tech companies’ hands by claiming AI is so powerful. With that being said we should obviously still take AI down as it contributes to climate change, makes human dumber, and is currently taking some jobs. Once again, we should be wary of it, but not so afraid of it.
