I hate that there are actually people who defend AI art with “Technology is the future,” because art isn’t supposed to be technology. Art is about self-expression and creative intent, but AI lacks a crucial factor in the creation of Art: desire. AI doesn’t “want” to make anything, it sees patterns and a prompt that tells it what to make. Without that personal flair, there’s nothing. The worst part is that technology is supposed to make things more convenient, but AI art doesn’t do that for actual artists. Why are people so focused on telling artists what they need?? Would you ever look at a guy who enjoys jogging and tell him he should give up and get a car? Or would you tell a chef that they should rely purely on microwaveable food? If we looked at the world in the same way that most AI “artists” do, we’d suck the life out of everything.
Here’s a fun idea: If you want to make art, learn how to do it yourself. If it’s not for you, that’s fine, but don’t go around calling yourself an artist because you can type a prompt into an AI. And hey, maybe you’ll actually like it and end up wanting to learn more. It might take time, but it’s worth the effort if you’re willing to see it through.
