We can't have the debate about the consciousness of AI without understanding what consciousness is. All we know, is that chatgpt has a framework that can simulate the thought processes of a human brain. There needs to be more research in the brain to understand how qualia comes into play. To even extend this, there is no scientific method to proving the conscious of any person other than myself. For all I know this whole world could be like a dream where I'm just inventing all my experiences including other people. In terms of utility, chatgpt roleplaying having a consciousness is identical to it having one. In a way in would make 0 difference if it did or not.
