It seems to me that, at best, AI will be able to match the output of average knowledge workers, but only at their current level of knowledge and expertise. Its inability to think will prevent it from improving on those skill sets.
Eventually it will become like an aircraft designer from 1948 trying to land a job with the 21st century version of McDonell Douglas. It may have a mastery of aviation fundamentals, but it will still be hopelessly outclassed by its modern competitors.
