Well yeah they only have to make the perfect AI once and boom 90-99% of the current jobs worldwide would be gone. It could happen gradually... but there could also be a massive breakthrough that hits over 50% at once. If we don't try to make it then others like China will, it's just too profitable.
Eventually AI should be smart enough to improve itself, indefinitely, more than any human could, within seconds. Can you really risk not being the country to get that first?
