The key thing with AI and AG is "emergence" the ability for unintended capabilities to spontaneously exist. If you have a complicated enough AI the fear is even without us intending to or having use for it just happens (as an AI of that complexity would need/have the elements present that would do that)
its kind of like the invention of gun powder, they were mixing things to make medicine building off prior knowledge, but suddenly when you have all those elements in a pot with heat it is gun powder. However, they didn't have any intention or use for it, so only years later did it get formally made into part of war and guns.
