I spent 40 years in Software tech and for what it’s worth retired as a Distinguished Engineer and serially patented inventor. The rapid changes in the current job market are not simply due to AI automation. A massive amount of traditional tech infrastructure is very stable and has been commodified to the point where substantially fewer engineers are required to maintain and continue extending it. Also, the number of individuals who attended coding boot camps to get into entry level web development jobs or obtained computer science degrees because of $$ in their eyes created an over supply of early career or lower-skilled tech workers. The “agile project management” boom of the past 20 years did similarly — created a flood of “tech admin” workers with relatively low skills compared to what it takes to do hard-core engineering. These are just a couple of examples. Combined with corporate bloat from 15 years of near zero interest rates hiring (for projects that have either paid off and matured or failed) plus Covid pandemic over-hiring, then the transition from older ways of innovating/automating to the evolution of AI makes this picture much clearer. Hiring has fundamentally changed For all of these reasons and more.
