So I do gig work online (RLHF in coding for various AI companies). Essentially you have access to tasks paid at a variable rate which you can take or leave. But it's highly competitive, with who knows how many other people working on the tasks. If the queue is filled at the beginning of the week, it is empty by Tuesday. The tasks also have insane deadlines (like a whole coding project in 6 hours), plus very granular rubrics your work is judged on. An the pay is pretty dismal (training for a particular project is also unpaid, and projects can evaporate with no explanation). Honestly, it's god awful. I call it a slop job, and I'm worried that's where things are headed for more and more people. Plenty of gigs available to whoever is desperate enough to do them, no benefits, no income guarantees, no sick time, no parental leave, no pension...just working on the ragged edge of poverty. It's not a good model for workers (great for companies though).
