If we're all NPCs in a simulation, then why would the AI CEOs bother asking permission to play the game the way they want to? They are winning. Why would they care how their actions affect the lower and middle class NPCs? If I too believed we were NPCs in a simulation, then Sam Altman's and Elon's ambition to be quasi "gods" actually makes a lot of sense. That's the goal of any RPG videogame.
Note: I don't actually believe that we are.
