This subject to me has always had to caveats: Man in the loop control systems and the AI stop button problem.
The thing for humans to remember, which I think we all forget from time to time, is that all things that rely on computers, rely on electricity. For anything that doesn't generate it's own power, there is a "kill switch" right there, however unpleasant it may be to use.
