This video needs an update. Things have got a lot worse since then. Jobs are disappearing or being outsourced. Most of the people I grew up with were laid off in their 40's. Some needed to rely on UK welfare or disability which penalized any attempts at getting a job. So they never tried. They were trapped.
So I like the UBI idea of a floor of basic income that isn't tested and policed. That cuts out bureaucracy and the cost of enforcement and means testing.
I'm retired now and have what I would call a basic income (Social security) but it hasn't stopped me being active AT ALL. In fact, it's allowed me to not stress about paying bills, plus pursue projects and enjoy my life. Before my social security started at 62, I was a stress basket.
If UBI isn't introduced and full automation, AI and other tech takes over almost all jobs but the top earners horde their wealth, then there'll be a revolution. So I don't see UBI as a choice but a necessity.
