Their is another way to look at this: Autonomous systems have been in use for a 100 years in the form of land and sea mines. No Human is in the loop once set, the weapon decides when to go off. e.g. a sea mine in 1910s just destroys the first target that it comes across, 1940s a sea mine may be able to tell how big a target is and attack based on that criteria or say wait for the third target it sees vs the first. By the 1980s a mine can be set to attack a specific acoustic target e.g. ignore the golf sub but attack the alpha.
This is simply a continuation of the technology.
