The current self-driving taxis are very expensive to build, can only operate in geofenced areas, and require remote human operators to constantly monitor the vehicles. The Waymo business cannot be profitable in its present implementation but is heavily subsidised by Google, nor is it scalable outside these premapped tech demo areas. The problem of self driving cars is no closer to a real world solution than it was a decade ago. People have just added more tape around it to keep it sort of going on without failing in so many a scenario. Remove the tailor-fitted support, and we are back to 2016.
