Companies replacing employees to save is good for shareholders in the short-term. But as more companies do this, they will get to feel what they are also doing: substituting reduced costs for lower demand. Why? Because people without jobs have only savings to spend. Ultimately, owners of AI will simply transfer money from one pocket to the other. Taxing to give everyday people money to spend only complicates this mildly. I truly believe the future looks like this:
Government will control standard AI and robot assets, whose productivity will benefit ordinary citizens. We will live in a kind of communism supported by true slaves without incentive problems doing things we want and need them to do. The main de-stabilizer will be envy by the masses towards the small elite who can still contribute to progress, for which government grant them special privileges to set them apart. As the elite has always done, they will continues their conspicuous consumption and the masses must accept the hierarchy or destroy social order and their own welfare.
