In the US we have a legal system that puts great emphasis on precedents, i.e., "what we decided before." In my mind, I can see how if this were to go to court and the court decided to allow the copyrighting of AI-generated art, that could lead to some really bad outcomes. If it were to be decided that AI art can be copyrighted then, whether you believe it's likely or not, that could, and technically would, set up a precedent of people being allowed to copyright something they didn't actually make or conceive of from their own mind. Imagine how that ability could be abused in the future...
It does seem unlikely because it's so insane and obviously wrong, but our world is already so saturated with the insane and obviously wrong that we all know anything is possible.
