The killer robots are literally what's keeping Ukraine in the fight. If it were just manpower against manpower, Russia would have overrun Ukraine many times by now. Drones act like force multipliers, and AI programming has been instrumental in making drones self-destruct on the right target when they are jammed on the final approach. They make smaller countries fight against a vastly larger one on an equal footing. It's still about money, and it was so before. A country will fight until it can no longer defend itself economically, whether the economics in question are money, land, humans, technology, or logistics. While I can say nothing for sure, my guess is that these people hear the other side of the utopia coin that proponents hear when someone mentions AI. The truth is that the AI we have is pure marketing speak. In reality, they're LI /Limited Intelligences) that are dumber than animals, since at least animals can have independent thoughts and learn from their experiences. The "learning" of LLMs is more akin to copying, as they're unable to extrapolate from what they've seen or create anything from what they've been fed, either, unless someone tells them to combine it in a certain way.
