Far from foolproof. All they have to do is write the essay up whilst plagiarising, then create a new document and rewrite all that essay up word for word without any copy/paste.
Of course they're using chatgpt so are prob too dumb to do this.
This only really works if the students are in class writing their papers, not at home. Or they're required to use some kind of internal system.
My personal view on a decent way to stop this is just an online system that students have to log all their essays through, not google docs. And a system that by design prevents direct copy/paste into it, Google docs already have the tools to prevent external copy/pasting, so I'm sure that process could be adjusted to prevent stuff being pasted *into* their docs.
