On January 25, 1979, 25 year old Robert Nicholas Williams became the first person in history to be killed by a robot. He was an assembly line worker at the Ford Motor Company casting plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The accident involved a five story tall parts retrieval system built by Litton Industries.
Williams climbed into the third level of the storage racks to manually retrieve parts after the robot began giving erroneous inventory readings. Because the one ton transfer vehicle lacked any safety sensors or warning alarms, it failed to detect his presence. The mechanical arm struck him in the head and pinned him against the shelving, killing him instantly.
The most chilling detail is that the robot did not error out or stop after the impact. It continued its programmed duties for 30 minutes, moving car parts around the body of the victim until he was discovered by worried co-workers. In 1983, a jury awarded his family 10 million dollars, which was eventually increased to 15 million. This case remains the foundation for all modern industrial safety laws.
